Garage Door Spring Replacement Phoenix, AZ

Garage Door Spring Replacement Phoenix, AZ

With over 15 years of experience I can confidently say that most garage door repairs have to do with either broken or failing torsion springs. In either case a garage door spring replacement is necessary. Let’s examine both broken and failing torsion springs.

Broken Garage Door Torsion Springs

garage door spring replacementWhen a garage door spring breaks it is loud and if you are home you will more than likely hear it. The loud sound is cause by large amount of pressure being released. A broken garage door spring can be easy to identify. A noticeable gap in the spring of about 2” will let you know that you in fact have a broken spring. At this point opening and closing the door with any electric opener should not be attempted in order to prevent damage to the motor, gears, and rail of the opener. If you have a two car garage your door will likely (not always) have two springs in which case with some help you should be able to raise the door manually and free your cars if necessary. If your door only has one spring and it is broken do not attempt to open the door manually. The door can easily become crooked and come off track. In most cases replacing garage door springs is not a DIY type of job. Garage door springs are under extreme pressure and can cause severe injury or even death if the proper care is not taken.

Failing Garage Door Springs

failing garage door springsFailing garage door springs can be harder to identify. You will not see an obvious break in the spring, and in most cases the door will still work as normal. So how do you tell if your garage door springs are failing? When garage door springs start to fail they lose tension which in turn cause the door to be heavier that it should be with properly working springs. Door Tech Garage Doors suggests you do a balance check on your door quarterly for standard doors and monthly for heavier custom style doors. Checking the balance is a simple task that only takes a few minutes. The door will need to be released from the electric opener in order to perform this test. Raise the door half way and let go. The garage door should stay. If the door does stay then you have a properly balanced garage door.  If the wait of the door causes the door to fall after you let go then you have failing torsion springs. If the door starts to open itself after you let go then the springs you have on your door are not correct. If your door either rises or falls by itself than you should contact a professional right away to have the problem corrected. If you continue to use your garage door with failing springs permanent damage can be caused to both the door itself as well as the garage door opener.

While there is many outlets available that offer instruction and materials for the DIY. A 20 minute video is no substitute for years of experience. When comes to the largest moving part of your house it is better to know the door if fixed and maintained properly. 1. I remember when my garage door's torsion springs failed and made it so my garage door wouldn't open and close. It was a very interesting thing to have break, but at least I could get it taken care of. After reading this post, I now understand as to why it is that these springs fail and why they are important to have. Since that day though, I get regular check ups done and get services to ensure that everything is going the way that it is suppose to.

  5. I have a door from my utility room to the garage that is very old and the area where the latch exits the door by the striker plate is cracked and impossible to secure the plate screws to.
The jamb at the striker plate was shot as well (looks like someone tried to kick the door in at some point).
I replaced the jamb and striker but I was wondering if there is a way to repair the door instead of replacing it?

I thought about making a metal sleeve the same width as the door that would slide over the area with a hole for the knob and the bolt. Does anything like this already exist or is there another repair method that would address this issue?

The door is a very nice solid core door so I would like to save it if possible.
    Any input would be appreciated!
